Archaeologists You Should Know
MARION ALMY
The recently announced 2018 Florida Preservation Awards presented the Evelyn Fortune Bartlett Award, the state’s most prestigious historical award bestowed for an individual, to a professional archaeologist, Sarasota’s own Marion Almy, one of the founders of Time Sifters.
A native of Sarasota, Marion has dedicated her professional life to the documentation, assessment, and preservation of both prehistoric and historic resources. Early work alongside archaeologist George Luer led to the defining of the Manasota culture, in 1979, and identifying 25 archaeological sites around Tampa Bay and between Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor that were associated with it.
Marion is the founding principal and President of Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (ACI), Florida’s oldest full-service cultural resources management firm. Since its beginning in 1976, ACI has focused on research, writing, assessment and interpreting Florida’s prehistory and history. ACI holds the distinction of working as part of the mitigation team to document the decommissioning of NASA’s space shuttle program, specifically Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and associated launch complexes. Furthermore, as Principal Investigator for her firm, Marion has worked extensively to conduct surveys and excavations to ensure projects comply with the National Historic Preservation Act and/or local and state preservation statutes.
Marion's public contributions include donating significant time and expertise to facilitate the coordination of historic preservation issues and Florida’s growth management legislation through her tenure on local and regional planning boards and historical commissions. At present time, Marion continues to chair the Florida Historical Commission and serve on the Florida National Register Review Board.
Congratulations, Marion!
